Πρόκειται για απλή συνήθεια ή για ανάγκη επιβεβλημένη από τη φύση και του κάθε προϊόντος;

Η επιλογή μόνο τυχαία δεν είναι.

Η φύση του κάθε προϊόντος επιβάλλει το υλικό μέσα στο οποίο θα «φιλοξενηθεί», και η νομοθεσία είναι σαφής: Κάθε υλικό συσκευασίας πρέπει να είναι ελεγμένο για το τρόφιμο που θα χρησιμοποιηθεί.

Το κοινοτικό δίκαιο επιβάλλει επισήμους ελέγχους στα υλικά που έρχονται σε επαφή με τα τρόφιμα, ώστε να διαπιστωθεί ότι δεν παρατηρούνται φαινόμενα «μετανάστευσης» συστατικών από τις συσκευασίες προς τα προϊόντα που καταλήγουν στο ποτήρι και στο πιάτο μας.

Υπάρχει πάντα η πιθανότητα μετανάστευσης ουσιών από το υλικό της συσκευασίας προς το προϊόν. Στα πλαστικά υλικά συσκευασίας για παράδειγμα, αυτή η μετανάστευση αφορά είτε μονομερή, δηλαδή ουσίες που δεν πολυμερίστηκαν, είτε πρόσθετα πλαστικοποίησης που και οι δύο θεωρούνται τροφογενείς κίνδυνοι.

Γι’ αυτό και όλα τα υλικά τα οποία προορίζονται για αυτή τη χρήση θα πρέπει να περάσουν από ειδικά χημικά τεστ ώστε να διαπιστωθεί ότι είναι κατάλληλα για τα τρόφιμα.

Λάδι: συσκευάζεται σε γυαλί και πλαστικό

Το γυαλί είναι ένα από τα πιο ασφαλή υλικά, αλλά κι ένα υλικό που χρησιμοποιείται σε προϊόντα ποιότητας και προστιθέμενης αξίας. Το μεγάλο βάρος και η ευθραυστότητά του είναι ωστόσο η βασικότερη αιτία για τη μη εκτεταμένη χρήση του.

Αυτά για το απλό λάδι, γιατί για το έξτρα παρθένο ελαιόλαδο η νομοθεσία προβλέπει συσκευασία από γυαλί και μεταλλική συσκευασία με εσωτερική επένδυση κατάλληλης ρητίνης και χωρητικότητα όχι πάνω από 5 λίτρα.

Και στη συσκευασία του κρασιού κυρίαρχο υλικό είναι το γυαλί, παρόλο που συνολικά στη σύγχρονη αγορά συσκευασίας, το συγκεκριμένο υλικό διαθέτει το μικρότερο μερίδιο.

Η επιλογή του έγχρωμου (π.χ. πράσινου ή φιμέ) γυαλιού μάλιστα, στη συσκευασία του κρασιού, έχει το πρόσθετο πλεονέκτημα ότι διασφαλίζει και την ποιότητά του, καθώς προστατεύει το περιεχόμενο από την υπεριώδη ακτινοβολία.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια ωστόσο, έχουν αρχίσει να χρησιμοποιούνται στο χώρο του κρασιού συσκευασίες τύπου τετραπάκ.

Νερό: συσκευάζεται σε ΡΕΤ και γυαλί

Το ΡΕΤ είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα υλικά συσκευασίας όσον αφορά την πρόληψη των φαινομένων μετανάστευσης συστατικών προς το τρόφιμο. Γι΄αυτό και η χρήση του είναι τόσο εκτεταμένη.

Σε μικρότερο βαθμό στη συσκευασία νερού χρησιμοποιείται το γυαλί. Στα γυάλινα μπουκάλια, που γενικά θεωρούνται ασφαλή, σημασία δεν έχει μόνο η ποιότητα του γυαλιού αλλά και του πώματος.

Όπως και ο κύριος περιέκτης, έτσι και η ρητίνη, το καουτσούκ που χρησιμοποιείται στο καπάκι για τη στεγανοποίηση, θα πρέπει να τηρεί τις ίδιες, αυστηρές προδιαγραφές.

Η χρήση της γυάλινης συσκευασίας είναι σχετικά περιορισμένη. Κυρίαρχη στην αγορά του γάλακτος είναι η συσκευσία τετραπάκ.
